Windshield Wipers: The Best Maintenance for Summer Weather

Windshield Wipers, Wiper Blades, Wiper Fluid, Auto Maintenance, Water Repellent, Windshield Wipers, Wiper ArmsIt’s been a hot second since we had a rainstorm, so I was unprepared for the windshield streaks and chattering from my wipers today. I guess that means it’s time to discuss how to take care of your vehicle’s wipers. I gathered some basic information as well as a few tips to help prolong the life of your wipers this summer. Your routine auto maintenance regimen should include cleaning your wiper blades, refilling the wiper fluid reservoir, and inspecting the windshield wipers from top to bottom.

Do Windshield Wipers Need Maintenance?

The quick answer is yes. Routine auto maintenance of your windshield wipers is a simple way to improve visibility and ensure safe driving conditions. Plus, Florida has windshield laws that you must follow; failure to comply can result in a fine of up to $100 for a violation. And since replacement windshield wipers get more expensive every year, it makes sense to try to extend their life whenever possible. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

Remove Dirt From Wiper Blades

To clean your wiper blades, lift the entire wiper assembly off the windshield and gently wipe the rubber blades down with a clean cloth soaked in wiper fluid or lukewarm water. If dirt or debris is stuck in the grooves, you can use a wet toothbrush to loosen it, then rinse thoroughly with water.

Wash & Lubricate Wiper Arms

If your windshield wipers tend to stick or stutter when they’re in use, the hinges on the wiper arms may be dirty. Gently wipe around the hinges where your wipers connect to the brackets on the windshield. Ensure they are completely dry before lowering the assembly back onto the glass. Lubricate the pivot points with silicone spray to reduce squeaking and help prevent corrosion.

Clean Windshield

Having a clean windshield available is the best way to protect your wiper blades, especially during the summer. Bird droppings, bug juice, and dust can cause tiny scratches on the glass. Use a mild glass cleaner and a soft cloth to clean both sides of your windshield regularly. You can also use the windshield washing station at the gas station each time you fill up. Make sure to clean the area where the hood meets the glass, as leaves and other debris tend to accumulate there.

Refill Wiper Fluid Reservoir

Frequently refilling the washer fluid reservoir ensures you always have plenty of cleaning solution to keep your windshield clean. Open your car’s hood and locate the washer fluid reservoir (it’s usually white or semi-translucent with a blue cap). Open the cap and carefully pour in the washer fluid solution until the level reaches the ‘full’ indicator line. Never mix different types of washer fluid together, as the ingredients may interact and become less effective.

Choosing Wiper Fluid

Never use your windshield wipers on a dry windshield. Always spray plenty of wiper fluid on the glass before turning on your wipers. This practice helps prevent premature damage to the wiper blades and prolongs their life. Speaking of windshield wiper fluid, do you know that there are several different formulas with key benefits? Let’s look at a few:

  • All-Season Wiper Fluid: This fluid works well in a variety of climates and effectively removes dirt and debris. All-season wiper fluid is usually colored orange.
  • Bug Remover Wiper Fluid: This fluid formula effectively removes tough insect juices due to its strong cleaning agents, which break down organic matter. Most bug remover fluids are colored green.
  • De-icing Wiper Fluid: This formula works well in extreme winter conditions by using methanol or other alcohol-based compounds to lower the liquid’s freezing point. It quickly melts frost and ice while preventing refreezing. Some de-icing fluids are colored purple.

Note: If you use de-icing fluid during the winter, consider draining the reservoir and switching back to a regular washer fluid during the summer. De-icing ingredients aren’t necessary in the summer and can sometimes leave streaks on your windshield. Additionally, the other formulas are more effective at removing bugs and debris in warm summer conditions.

Tips For Improved Wiper Performance

Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be ready for anything this summer.

Park In The Shade

Exposure to strong sunlight and high summer temperatures can cause the rubber on your wiper blades to harden and crack. When possible, park your vehicle in the shade or use a car cover to protect the windshield wipers from harmful UV rays.

Use Water Repellent On Glass

This cool product includes a hydrophobic ingredient, so water droplets quickly roll off your windshield. Purchase a bottle of water repellent for automotive glass and spray it on your clean windshield. Following the directions will result in water beading up on the glass and easily swept away by the wipers. This feature greatly improves visibility during summer rainstorms.

Try Using Glycerine Soap

UV rays can damage rubber wiper blades, causing them to dry out, harden, and become less effective over time. Glycerine soap (liquid or solid) attracts moisture, making it an effective cleaning agent for washing wiper blades. Use a little on a wet rag and wipe away the dirt in a circular motion, much like applying lotion to dry skin. Once the wiper blades are clean and re-moisturized, be sure to rinse them thoroughly with water.

Buy Correct Replacement Blades

Proper auto maintenance can definitely extend the life of your windshield wipers. However, climate and other environmental factors mean they still require replacing about once a year. When buying new wiper blades, choose quality replacements for the current season. Consult the parts catalog or refer to your owner’s manual to determine the style and size of wiper blades used by your vehicle. Always replace both wipers at the same time to maintain even cleaning across your windshield. And don’t forget your rear window.
